There I was, Jake Alzner standing on the tip of the high dive at swim bay, my legs shaking, my teeth chattering together as the heavy cold breeze brushing against my body. My life sucked, I had no friends and everyone made fun of me. But in a few minutes my life was about to change. I looked down at the water about fifteen feet down, I took a deep breath, a couple of bounces and I leaped in the air. My arms were flailing all over, my heart was racing like never before, and I had only ever done this twice in my lifetime so it was still frightening for me. My feet smashed against the chili water as I landed flat footed, the rest of my body entered the water. Right before my head went under I heard multiple amounts of people cheering for me considering I was standing up there for at least fifteen minutes and that cheering made me feel special for the first time in a long time. I felt like it was all a dream. When I hit the water I usually stay under the water for about ten seconds but this time was different from other times. Due to the fact the water was not very deep, my feet touched the bottom. Right before I was about to run out of breathe, I was still far away from the top, I knew I was in trouble. I swear I was about to lose my breath but it seemed like I could stay under the water forever, in fact I could stay under water forever.
I swear it was like magic right in front of my eyes, I could hold my breath for as long as I wanted, personally in my mind it was the best power that anyone could ever have. I continued to explore the bottom of the lake as people worry knowing that I have been under the water for minutes now. I decided to come up to the surface now , to not scare any of the people watching me and I didn’t really want anyone to know , I am going to keep it to myself. My head comes out of the water as many people cheer for me. I struggled to the ladder; I was still stunned about my abilities. I climb the ladder one step at a time panting hardly. I reach the top to see many people standing glaring at me; I look to the left and notice my mother waiting in the car in the parking lot. On my way to get my clothes and shoes I took my time, I heard the sound of a car honking and looked over and I thought to myself “who else could it be? It’s obviously my mother considering she has no patience at all.” I rolled my eyes and made my way to the car. When I got home I ran up to my room and layed on my bed still extremely stunned wondering if this was all a dream. I knew if I told my parents they wouldn’t let me go to the lake anymore thinking that that power was unsafe or something. I hate my parents. They are way too overprotected and they do not let me do anything. So I decided to not tell anyone about this power I discovered and anyways it’s not like I could tell many people , I had barely any friends anyways.
From that day on, I went to swim bay every single day and used my “super power” is what I called it but one day my mom started to get very suspicious because I went to swim bay every single day but before that I discovered my power I had never went and my mother even knew that I wasn’t the strongest swimmer in the world. So one day my mother started a conversation with me.
“So Jake, why are you going to swim bay so much now?” mother questioned.
“Uhh, I’m starting to like swimming now.” I replied.
“Oh really, that’s good.” My mom said sounding impressed.
I know for a fact that my mother knew that I was lying because mothers know everything that goes on in their kid’s life.
One day it surprisingly rained, I was shocked because it never rains in the summer. I was also upset because I could not use my power that day. After a long day of thinking and I finally decided that I should tell my mother about my power. It was a risk but I knew she knew I was hiding something by the way she acts now every time she brings me to swim bay. I slowly and nervously walked up to my mother and said:
“Mother, I have something to tell you.”
“What is it Jake?” mother questioned with a bizarre face.
“Drive me to swim bay.” I asked.
“What, why?!” mother said surprised.
I explained to my mother why we had to hurry over to swim bay. We scampered to the car and drove about 15 minutes to swim bay. It was surprisingly very quiet the whole way there considering I though my mom would be freaking out at me just because she’s one of those people. When we got to swim bay, I quickly took of my seat belt, got up and ran on to the dock. My mother hurried after me at a rapid pace.
My mother caught up to me.
“So show me what you wanted to show me!” Mother yelled.
“Ok, watch this mom” I replied nervously.
I took a running start from far away from the edge of the dock. I started running and leaped into the water soaring thru the air as my mom looked on very nervously trying not to look because she did not know what I was about to do. My body entered the water; my mom looked very carefully noticing nothing really happened but she was about to see something very interesting. I stayed under the water for a long time and my mother even knew that I couldn’t hold my breath for that long. I was still under the water, it had been about 2 minutes now and that is pretty long. My mother began to worry looking on with a very worried look on her face. Biting her nails, very nervous. It had been almost 5 minutes not, mother lost track of where I was. Without hesitation she leaped into the water searching for me. I heard the splash and the millions of little bubbles in front of my face , after the bubbles cleared out , I saw my mother sprawling , looking for me. I grabbed her and rose to the top. My mother out of breath, panting fiercely as I am calm as ever.
“Are you ok?!” mother yelled.
“Yes mother, I’m fine, don’t worry.” I replied.
“Then how did you stay under that long?” she asked.
“That’s what I’m talking about, I have a super power.” I said proudly.
Mother grabbed me and we swam back to the ladder. We struggled up that ladder as stumbled onto the dock. My mother was stunned as she glared at me, she had nothing to say, she was speechless.
“So you’re saying you can stay under water for as long as you want?” She asked in shock.
“Yes, mom I am telling the truth.” I replied.
“Let’s go.” My mother suggested.
We walked over to the car to go home. On the way home we were discussing about my “power”. My mother had never seen this in her life, or even heard of it. I was surprised my mother wasn’t so worried about me and she didn’t even mention me never using it again which in this case was a good thing for me. We finally came to a conclusion that we were both not going to tell anyone, no friends, no teachers, nobody. We were going to keep it a complete secret.
A few months later I went to swim bay on a scorching beautiful day to cool off. I plunged into the water head first and entered the water traveling deep down to the bottom, all of a sudden something happened that I thought would never happen. While I was at the bottom exploring the water in amusement. I ran out of breath. In shock I hurried to the surface with water rushing thru my throat. I reach the top panting hard, out of breath. I rushed to the ladder in disappointment. I thought that this power would last forever but I guess not. In sadness I walked to my mother in the car waiting to pick me up. I broke the news to her , she didn’t really seem to care , I broke down into tears when we got home , so unfortunately my life went back to no fun at all , still no friends considering I kept it a secret the whole time , I officially hated life. That was the most fun I had ever had in my whole entire life. My life was never the same.
